This might get a bit technical so bear with me.
Today we were three. We had a member of the patient transfer service with us. They are the people who take patients home after their stay in hospital and bring people in for their out patients appointments. Their management has decided that they should have one day a year out with a frontline crew (ie us) to see what we do. Absolutely brilliant idea. Theres too much us and them in our service as it is. Now if we can only get the admin people out with us as well..but thats a different matter.
So there we were sat in one of our award winning carparks. We did the hour and bit more besides (It was a nice day). My crewmate was getting a bit wriggly because she needed the loo. She wasnt keen on looking for a bush so we called up control on the Radio to ask if we could go somewhere with facilities.
"You have been logged off your vehicle for an hour, have you pressed anything on your terrafix" came the reply. Terrafix is how we get our jobs. A sort of small computer unit.
We looked at each other. Obviously nothing had been pressed
"Negative. We've just been enjoying the sunshine"
There was a longish pause.
"I've got an emegency for you in S. Control out."
S is a small village on the other side of the town. Approximately 10 miles away. The only way to it was through the middle of town in rush hour. This would take a while.
Now we were annoyed but thats the nature of the job and we both recognised that there was nothing we could do about it.
But. We passed one empty ambulance on the way back to base. We also passed another ambulance on emergency going to a job that we shot past. If you see what I mean.
This was starting to smell.
Anyway we did the job. It was a rather unwell 85 year old lady who had been violently sick a few hours earlier. She had brought up what looked like coffee grounds. This is a good indication that she had a bleed in her stomach. When we moved her she left a dark stain where she was sitting as well. Oh dear. Definately a bleed. It was coming out both ends. We got her into hospital.
Next job we were sent to a small town to the North which we also cover for a Lady with a possible broken NOF. This is a Neck of Femur. Its an injury that old ladies are prone to when they fall. Men rarely get it. Its something to do with the different way the pelvis is constructed. She was as high as a kite when we got there. The responder had given her a big dose of morphine to take the pain away. We got her into Hospital. And got told to return to base. "Great", we thought "lunch" It being midday and all.
No.
We walked through the door and greeted the three crews who were already there when the radio opened up to send us back to where we had just come from.
Not happy.
The lady we went out to was lovely. 92 year old, deaf as a post and was having an allegic reaction to something. Her tongue was swelling up.
Now we worked from 8am to 4pm and we had our break at ten past 3 in the afternoon. That was deliberate, that wasn't pressure of work that was control having it in for us.
I cant prove it though
Nevermind. Weekend off
