Things I have seen

by emmbee @ 11. Feb 2006 - 20:24:14

I have seen...

A woman who had burned her entire body except her face but was feeling no pain at all

A girl who had been hit by a train and had been smeared over 250 yards of track

A man die in front of my eyes and then get up and try to strangle me

A 9 day old baby lieing cold and stiff in its cot while down stairs the congratulations cards sat on the window sill

A little old lady who had broken virtually every bone in her body appologise to me for being a nuisance

A twenty stone marine with a broken arm hysterical with pain

A man die 5 times in the space of twenty minutes

Two collegues deciding which victim will live and which victim will die

A baby come into this world

That's some list, lot's of things to see and comprehend. I've had various dealings with ambulence crew, my daughter had a massive stroke at 8 months of age, went into a coma and has had some pretty huge seizures that we couldn't get her out of with the diazepam. I never really know what they think about what they're having to deal with, it's usually a pretty surreal situation you're in whenever you meet them and they're like a link coming into your house and taking over ...such a relief , I have a lot of respect for you.
I suppose you have to be very strong or find peace with it all somehow. Goodluck.

Thank you for that. I hope your little one made a good recovery. I think what I was putting down were the jobs over the last 5 years that have really stuck with me. There are people out there who have seen and experienced far more than me. This job does get pretty surreal at times but we are in a pretty unique position. We drop into peoples lives for probably not more than an hour or so and when we leave them their lives are sometimes changed irrevicably. We get to go home but they may be dealing with the consequences for years to come.
As I said before it can be the best job in the world. But you have to find your own way of coping with it

A man die and then try to strangle you?!

Was he misdiagnosed by our overworked and severley underpaid NHS service by any chance?

Funny Old world...

As I live and breath that is the truth. He was on our stretcher, his heart stopped, I shocked him, his heart started again, he regained consiousness almost instantly althoug he had stopped breathing for a few seconds. Very confused and in pain (heart attack and shocking hurts A LOT) he lashed out at the first thing he could find. Me. I'll tell the full story one day

What an amazing job you do.

It it wasnt for people like you, I would be dead (asthma attack) It probably wasnt you or your crew that turned me back to pink from blue, but thanks anyway.

Thank you on behalf of my collegues in Hampshire. Asthma is a horrible illness, im not a sufferer myself, but i have seen many people with it. Breathing is the one thing everyone takes for granted and when you cant..... Very scary.
